On August 14, 2015 Post of Russia will issue a stamp dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Leningrad Zoo. The stamp illustrates a pelican with aviary on the background.

 

Leningrad Zoo (Leningradsky Zoopark in St. Petersburg) is one of the oldest zoos in Russia and one of the northernmost zoos in the world. It was founded on 2 (14) of August 1865 by Sophia and Julius Gebgardt. The first major collection of animals consisted of tigers, bears, lions, small carnivores, water birds, parrots. Nowadays, Leningrad Zoo is considered to be a unique museum of wildlife, environmental and educational institution. It contains about 600 species of mammals, birds, fish and invertebrates from different parts of the Earth.
